The Courtneys are back with a new album, and it’s full of daydreams about teenage crushes, long-distance relationships and endless summers.
The trio has certainly come a long way since we last checked in: the bandmates have toured the world supporting the likes of Tegan and Sara and Mac Demarco, signed to New Zealand’s legendary indie label Flying Nun and received acclaim from music publications around the world.
Their sophomore album, The Courtneys II, is a well-crafted mix of catchy riffs, driving basslines and sweet-sounding vocals, accompanied by some not only memorable but insightful lyrics. In particular, “Silver Velvet” and “Minnesota” stand out as ready-made indie pop anthems, and “25” includes the self-aware observation: “Is it you I want? Or is it you I want to be?”
On this month’s CBC Radio 3 podcast, drummer/singer Jen Twynn Payne talked about how her lyrics provide a window into her life.
“I feel like I’m constantly going through some sort of quarter-life crisis ... I almost feel like I’m giving myself advice, which I’m having trouble taking," she said of her songwriting process.
Feel-good and relatable, The Courtneys II is the first album of 2017 you don’t want to miss.
The Courtneys embark on an extensive North American tour starting in their Vancouver hometown on March 14. See the list of dates here. The Courtneys II will be released on Feb. 17 via Flying Nun Records. You can pre-order the album here.
