Today would have been the 58th birthday of Prince and the birthday of the late, legendary musician is being marked in a number of ways.

In Minnesota, it has been declared Prince Day by Gov. Mark Dayton. Residents of Minnesota are being requested to wear purple today in honour of the musician.

"Prince was the creator of the 'Minneapolis sound,' a contribution not only to the global catalogue of music genres, but to Minnesota's worldwide prominence and its economic growth," stated the proclamation.

Prince was born in Minneapolis and his Paisley Park compound in Chanahassen, Minn., where he recorded much of his music, was where he was found dead last month.

In addition to the Minnesota proclamation, 15 of Prince's albums are being made available on the streaming service Tidal.

Among the albums now available are The Black Album, New Power Soul and The Rainbow Children as well as a collection of live albums and unreleased and rare recordings.

Additionally, BET announced plans to honour Prince at the 2016 BET Awards on Sunday, June 26. A live performance featuring the Roots, D'Angelo, Janelle Monae and Prince collaborator Sheila E. will be part of the show, the network announced.

Prince died on April 21 and a report released last week revealed the cause of death was an accidental fentanyl overdose. He was 57 years old.
