Whether she’s belting out a classic R&B number, singing the blues or acting on the stage, Shakura S’Aida does it with a whole lot of soul. So it’s not surprising that her appearance on My Playlist has a soulful vibe.

S’Aida was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Switzerland. She is now a long-time Canadian who makes her home in Toronto. It was in a Toronto community band called Mystique that S’Aida began belting out songs. Later, she became the lead singer for Kaleefah, a 13-piece world music band that was nominated for a Juno award.

In 2008 S'Aida got seriously noticed when she came within a millimetre of winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee against more than 100 bands from 20 countries. That same year, she released her debut solo recording, Blueprint, followed by Brown Sugar in 2010 and the double CD, Time in 2012.

S’Aida’s powerhouse of a voice — no microphone needed here! — led her to a parallel career in music theatre with roles in productions of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Momma I Want To Sing. She’s graced the stage of the historic Apollo Theatre, has been featured with the legendary Jimmy Smith and sung in a backup choir with Patti Labelle. More recently she created a show about one of her all-time favourite artists, the singer and pianist Nina Simone.

Her picks include tracks by Kellylee Evans, Clarence Carter, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Jadea Kelly.

Shakura S'Aida is an R&B, soul and blues musician.
