Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!

On Dec. 9, 1965 — 50 years ago — nearly half of the U.S. TV-watching population tuned in to A Charlie Brown Christmas, an animated broadcast that featured the music of the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Prior to its debut, producers were worried the show was too religious, and the soundtrack was too jazz cutting-edge for children's programming. Were they ever wrong: 15 million homes had eyes glued to that broadcast, and it has since become an iconic Christmas classic.

Jerry Granelli, a drummer and longtime native of Halifax, N.S., is the only surviving member of that original trio. On Dec. 5, 2015, the Jerry Granelli Trio presents a show called Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas presented by the Halifax Jazz Festival that featured all the music from that original broadcast.

We recorded their Halifax performance for The East Coast Music Hour with David Myles, and here they are performing "Skating," and the true Charlie Brown Christmas classic, "Linus and Lucy."
