The VH1 Hip Hop Honors show has been on hiatus for a number of years, but it returned with a bang last night as the show took time out to honour pioneering female hip-hop artists Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim and Salt N Pepa. The event was held at David Geffen Hall last night in New York City
For the tribute to Missy Elliott, Canadian singer Nelly Furtado, who appeared on the remix of Elliott's hit "Get Your Freak On" returned to reprise her verse. Furtado was joined by female hip-hop artists Eve, Trina and Remy Ma who performed Missy Elliott songs like "Work It" and "Hot Boys."
The tribute to Lil' Kim featured Lil Mama, Teyana Taylor, French Montana and The Lox performing "Crush on You," "Queen B" and "It's All About the Benjamins" and social media was especially impressed with Taylor's performance.
For the show's grand finale, Queen Latifah performed her hit song "Unity" in front of a screen of images highlighting female hip-hop MCs including Canada's Michie Mee. Latifah was joined on stage by artists such as Salt n Pepa, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, Monie Love and many more as the tribute ended on a celebratory note.
