While he is critically revered for his way with words, Ron Sexsmith has been primarily known for applying them to his music. Now he is adding author to his well-known reputation as a critically acclaimed Juno Award-winning songwriter.
Sexsmith is all set to publish his debut novel in late 2017. Entitled Deer Life, it will be published by Dundurn Press.
Billed as a "groundbreaking fairy tale" the "whimsical yet dark" book will tell the story of a boy who accidentally gets into trouble with a witch. Deer Life will deal with themes of bullying and revenge, and Sexsmith says the story came to him in a dream.
"We're thrilled to be able to work with a great talent like Ron Sexsmith. Given his brilliant lyrical ability, I wasn't surprised to see him ably shift into writing engaging, funny, yet poignant prose fiction," said Dundurn Press editor Shannon Whibbs in a statement. "It was a pleasure to read an early draft of Deer Life. It made me laugh, it made me think, and I was caught up in the fairy-tale world he has created and described so evocatively. This is an exciting time for Dundurn and we're very glad Ron has come on board with us to launch this new creative venture."
Sexsmith's debut novel arrives on the heels of his last creative venture, his 2015 album Carousel One. His 2014 album, Forever Endeavour, won the adult alternative album of the year at the Junos and his 2011 release Long Player Late Bloomer was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.
