Over the past few months, we've heard rumblings about What we Bring, saxophonist Ben Wendel's impending release on Motéma Music, featuring several of his regular associates — pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Henry Cole. Today (Thursday), the Vancouver-born, Brookyln-based musician gave us a first taste of what we can expect on the disc in an exclusive JazzTimes video premiere

Using a catchy bassline and upbeat groove as its foundation, "Song Song" sees the quartet making use of the tune's deceptively simple form to create a feel-good atmosphere. Here, Wendel shows us that jazz compositions don't have to be mind-bogglingly complicated to make a deep statement  — the group makes sophisticated music throughout the relatively concise track.
