Don't Walk Away
You know the extras? The folks who are hired to stand around the basketball court, or do a two-step at the party, or scream along at a fake concert.
I am was fascinated by these mysterious people who with huge smiles or well-practiced screw faces, or sometimes bored expressions the editor missed in the final cut.
They are the unsung heroes who help to tell the story behind the song. I highly encourage you to check out the extras that star in the video for this next song. The dance moves of the guys and their various levels of thirst for the singers is hilarious. This is ‘90’s R&B group Jade with “Don’t Walk Away.”
The video for Keith Sweat's “Twisted ” may just be the height of R&B corniness. There’s an assassination, a steamy love scene during a storm, a shoot-out and a hot girl left dead literally hanging from a fire escape in a sexy pose. Somehow defying the laws of gravity. Hey…it was the ‘90’s.
Birds chirping merrily is not something that generally comes to mind when you think of soul music but there they are, from start to finish in Minnie Riperton’s classic song “Loving You.”
It’s a peaceful, angelic tune that was originally created as a distraction for her daughter Maya. Minnie Riperton’s baby daughter grew up to be comedian and actress Maya Rudolph and as the story goes, that melody is the only thing that would calm the baby down and give Minnie some time to hang out with her husband uninterrupted. When she recorded the song Minnie brought Maya with her to the studio and in the original unedited recording of the song Minnie Riperton sings her daughter’s name at the end. Minnie passed away from cancer at the age of 31 and on her epitaph the opening lines of this song are dedicated to her memory: “Lovin’ you is easy ‘cause you’re beautiful.” Indeed. This is Minnie Riperton with “Lovin’ You.”
Jidenna’s recent album “The Chief” is one of my faves and I know I’ve been making fun of a lot of videos here but check the one that goes with this song “Bambi.” I actually really like it.
