Jason Howard has built an international career on his celebrated performances of the major roles for baritones in Verdi's operas. So it came as a surprise when in 2008, he was asked to sing Wotan in Wagner's opera, Das Rheingold. But Howard rose to the challenge and was a huge success. He then went on to many other notable Wagnerian performances. But Howard has also had a soft spot for American musicals. He made a name for himself playing Emile de Becque in an internationally acclaimed production of South Pacific. Howard has recorded several CDs of Broadway and Hollywood songs, particularly those of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Howard grew up in Wales, surrounded by his mother's love of music and the strong local tradition of singing. As an adult, Howard worked as a fireman and sang in the choir for fun. But then he caught the opera bug. Moving to London, he studied first at Trinity College of Music and later at the Royal College of Music. He began his professional career at Scottish Opera before taking to stages in the rest of the United Kingdom, Europe and North America.
Howard has lived in Toronto for most of the last two decades and he teaches at his private studio.
