Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman

From Pam Grier’s well kept afro, to Jim Kelly’s moves, the Blaxploitation era of cinema provided the world with a ton of iconic imagery. But there was one movie in particular, that for better or worse was accused of influencing a generation. With flashy suits, a customized Cadillac Eldorado and a fedora hat, the movie Superfly cemented the image of the hustler/pimp in pop culture…and beyond. Many real life gangsters like drug trafficker “Freeway” Rick Ross (not the rapper the real guy) have credited the film Superfly with being a huge influence on choosing to turn to a life of crime.

Not the greatest claim to fame.

The soundtrack to Superfly by Curtis Mayfield though is a lot less controversial. More successful than the movie, the soundtrack is considered by many music critics to be a classic and was celebrated for its socially aware lyrics and critical stance.

Tevin Campbell - Can We Talk

A lot of kids have dreams of being a child star. But really, what’s it like when you reach the peak of your career at the age of 16? Let’s take the case of Tevin Campbell.

Boasting a four octave vocal range, a million dollar smile and a co-sign from music legend Quincy Jones, the stars were aligned for Tevin. After the release of his debut album in the early ‘90’s, Tevin was everywhere. He guest starred in episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, New York Undercover and Moesha and popped up in movies like Prince’s Graffiti Bridge and was the voice of Powerline in A Goofy Movie (an underrated classic). Tevin was nominated for numerous grammy’s but lost to R&B legends like Luther Vandross, Boyz II Men and Ray Charles. This was truly an era when a nominated meant something - competition was hella steep.

Tevin was on top of the world but then came the decline.

He started sporting really weird braids, the music wasn’t as good and then he had some trouble with the law. Teen years are hard enough...add fame to the cocktail and it can often be a recipe for disaster. Tevin’s never achieved the success of his teen years.

Let’s go back to them for a moment.

Miguel - Adorn

One listener sent in a request for this next song and i was shocked to realize I hadn’t already played it. So it’s time to correct that wrong.

Jamila Woods - Holy

Soundtracks for self care are among my favourite playlists to make and this next song has definitely been added to my collection. Jamila Woods is one of my favourite new R&B singers and the fact that this video features levitating braids and beautiful choreography has only made me love her more.
