James Ehnes plays with "phenomenal control, allied to musicianship of the highest order" according to the Times (London) in a review from October 2009. Reviewers have also praised Ehnes' palette of sound, which can be lyrical and tender, powerful or hair-raisingly virtuosic. As proof, Ehnes has already earned a Grammy, a Gramophone award and eleven Junos for his CDs, which range in repertoire from Bach to Bartok.
Ehnes began violin lessons in Brandon, Manitoba at the age of four. When he was 13, Ehnes was invited to perform with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He continues to play with the world's finest musicians, on the world's best instruments. His CD/DVD entitledHomage, features Ehnes performing on twelve of the greatest violins and violas ever made.
Ehnes has been honoured by Brandon University with a Doctor of Music degree and he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010. In 2013, Ehnes was named an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, limited to a select group of 300 living distinguished musicians.
