Watch what happens when a cellist serenades a pod of beluga whales

Robert Rowat

Whales and their mysterious language have long been a source of inspiration for musicians.

American composer Alan Hovhaness wrote And God Created Great Whales, a symphonic poem for orchestra and recorded whale sounds; George Crumb was moved to write Vox Balaenae for electric flute, cello and amplified piano after hearing recordings of humpback whales.

Can music bridge the communication gap between whales and people? This cellist and a pod of beluga whales seem to be on the verge of a breakthrough.
