Radio 2 Top 20, Dec. 12: The New Basement Tapes top the chart with 'Kansas City'

By Lana Gay

This week, U2 makes a strong jump up the chart. Fellow Irish artist Hozier continues to dominate the top five. Whitehorse gallops up five spots. Plus we have a brand new number one.

I’m not sure how the angelic voice of Halifax’s Jenn Grant didn’t climb the chart this week: “No One’s Gonna Love You (Quite Like I Do)” dropped eight spots to number 16. It’s a song that is the musical equivalent of that feeling of first love, remember that? Exciting knots in your stomach, the sweet separation anxiety when you weren’t together, that feeling like someone just filled up your heart and imprinted their name on it.

Don’t believe me? Watch the video from Grant’s performance on q.

And now onto a singer who sounds like she’s been playing smoky, whisky-fuelled bars for a decade, but the young Elle King is only 23.

She did try to play those dark boozy bars underage, but when one of her parents found out she was using a fake ID to get into a bar to perform, they printed out photos of her with the word “underage” written beneath and posted them at every bar on the L.A. strip. Hear King tell that tale in the video below.

That didn’t stop her from playing at parties and busking on sidewalks, though, and now she’s back on stages and in the top 10 this week with “Exes and Ohs.”

Up four spots to number one is celebrity super group the New Basement Tapes, which is giving life to old Bob Dylan lyrics. Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons takes lead vocal on “Kansas City.”
