In 1966, Leonard Cohen sat down for an interview with then CBC-TV host (and eventually Governor General) Adrienne Clarkson.

The 31-year-old Cohen had just released Beautiful Losers, his second novel, but it was songwriting that seemed to bring him more fulfillment and happiness at the time. In the colourful interview, he discussed the “mechanics of happiness,” which may or may not involve psychiatry, pills and positive thinking.

You can watch the full conversation over at the CBC Digital Archives. Listen to Leonard Cohen's new album, Popular Problems, streaming exclusively in Canada at CBC Music until Sept. 21.
