Alessia Cara promotes self-love in inspiring new video for ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’

To celebrate her 20th birthday today, Canadian pop star Alessia Cara has released a new music video for her song, “Scars to Your Beautiful,” off her 2015 debut, Know-It-All. The video, which is for Cara’s third single following the successes of “Here” and “Wild Things,” showcases a number of people sharing stories of being different and how they learned to embrace it and love themselves for those differences.

Cara came up with the idea for the video, drawing influences from TLC’s “Unpretty” and Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful," and was adamant on presenting a diverse cast of people, including cancer survivors, transgender people, body image activists and even fellow pop star Jojo.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Cara explained her concept: “I had this vision of many different cinematic shots of different kinds of people. I wanted all kinds of people — young, old, whatever their situation, whether it’s visible scars, non-visible scars — just a bunch of different women, and there are some men in there as well because it can reach out to guys too. But I wanted real shots of real people telling their stories, and showing the story through little vignettes.”

She adds that, while the concept of the video takes cues from the aforementioned influences, “you can never have too many reminders and too many songs talking about those things. It was important to put that in my own words and remind people that they are beautiful no matter what.”

“The majority of the messages I get about my music are usually about that song, which is really impactful and amazing because, of course, that’s the point of the song,” she said, explaining how much this specific song has touched fans. “I want people to feel something. I want people to feel like they’re not alone.”
