Two-time Juno winner Kiran Ahluwalia is known for her crystal clear voice that soars over changing rhythms and blurred musical boundaries. As a young girl growing up in Dehli, India, Ahluwalia studied Indian classical music -- in particular, a song form called ghazal which is based on Urdu poetry. Then when she and her family moved to Toronto, Ahluwalia immersed herself in all-things Canadian, including the rock band Rush.
Naturally, Rush is included in Ahluwalia's playlist, along with music by Farida Khanum, Sahawa blues band Tinairwen (with whom she often collaborates) Jane Bunnett and Ahluwahia's husband and musical partner, jazz guitarist Rez Abbasi.
Ahluwalia’s latest recording Sanata : Stillness is a hybrid of Indian and Pakistani grooves, Saharan blues and western Jazz; all of which she brings together to create music that is uniquely her own.
My Playlist is heard on Radio 2's Inside The Music. The show airs on Sundays at 3:00 pm (3:30 pm NL) and again on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm (7:30 pm NL).
