Violist Steven Dann is one of Canada’s foremost string players. After graduating from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music in 1977, he became principal viola with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. A few years later, while at the age of 27, he won the same position with the acclaimed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Dann would go on to perform with the Toronto and Vancouver Symphonies and has been guest principal violist with major orchestras in Boston, Birmingham and Lucerne.
A musical explorer at heart and a self-proclaimed “chamber music addict,” Dann has also performed in many different small ensembles. He was a founding member of the Axelrod String Quartet and has performed with Anner Bylsma’s ensemble, L'Archibudelli, as well as with the Smithsonian Chamber Players – on their priceless collection of Stradivarius instruments.
Dann has given numerous world premiere performances of new compositions and has commissioned works from such composers as Christos Hatzis, Alexina Louie, R. Murray Schafer and others. Dann shares his love of music by teaching viola and chamber music at the Glenn Gould School and co-ordinating the chamber music program at the Domaine Forget in Quebec.
