The prizewinning Tafelmusik Chamber Choir celebrate their 35th anniversary this year, but Ivars Taurin's connection with Tafelmusik goes back before 1981. Taurins played viola in the very first concert the orchestra presented in 1979 and he joined the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra soon after.
Taurins grew up in Toronto and studied piano and violin as a youngster, later switching to the viola in high school. Taurins was drawn to the natural sound of period performance, as the early music movement developed. While studying in Holland, he became interested in the mix of words and music and that brought Taurins into the world of choral conducting. In recent years, Taurins has put aside the viola for full-time conducting with the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and with many of the major choirs in Canada.
Taurins is also an orchestral conductor. He has worked with many Canadian orchestras and for 10 years, he was the Principal Baroque Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic.
On this edition of This Is My Music, Taurins shares the music that inspires him.
This Is My Music is heard every Saturday at 10:00 am ET on Radio 2.
