Timothy Vernon founded Pacific Opera Victoria in 1980 and since that time, he's gone on to lead most of its more than 100 productions, which included some world premieres and Canadian firsts. Vernon has also served as Music Director of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra London in Ontario. He's been a music professor at McGill University and music director of the McGill Symphony -- a role where he led the orchestra in performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre and major concert halls in Canada.
In fact, over the years, Vernon has conducted every symphony orchestra and opera company in Canada. These days, Vernon's energy and vision have Pacific Opera Victoria punching well above its weight by doing co-productions with numerous other opera companies in Canada and abroad.
Vernon was born in Vancouver and raised in Victoria where he studied conducting with Otto Werner-Mueller. After spending 10 years in Vienna furthering his musical education, Vernon returned to Canada in 1975 to begin his conducting career.
In 2008, Vernon received the Order of Canada in recognition of his work in expanding professional opera in Canada and for his commitment to young musicians.
On this episode of This Is My Music, Vernon takes over hosting duties and shares his favourite scary music just in time for Halloween.
This Is My Music is heard every Saturday on Radio 2 at 10:00 am ET.
