First Play: Brasstronaut, self-titled

Judith Lynch

It's been four years since Brasstronaut released the critically acclaimed Mean Sun (2012). The Vancouver sextet is back with a self-titled record, its third studio release. The album was built in pieces as the members all contributed ideas from their different bases in Vancouver, Winnipeg and New York while pursuing various solo projects. As the audio sketches bounced back and forth among them, the pieces began to take shape and the new album was born.

From the ghostly horns in "Raveshadow" to the wholly analog but electronic-sounding middle section of "Tricky", Brasstronaut combines elements of rock, electronic, jazz and even a hint of Afrobeat and disco to create an eclectic, but by no means uneven, listening experience.

Brasstronaut is available in stores on Nov. 11. You can pre-order the album here.
