Award-winning singer, songwriter and producer Royal Wood sits in the My Playlist host's chair this week and he doesn't disappoint.
From his very first EP back in 2003, it was clear that Wood had a future in music if he wanted it. There was the voice, rich and honest, with strong musicianship and a kind of old Hollywood look about him. Critics took note.
Wood had studied piano in Lakefield, Ontario where he grew up on a small farm. By the time he was out of high school he’d added guitar, bass, drums and trumpet to his musical arsenal. While studying business at McGill, Wood began playing jazz piano in Montreal clubs.
Wood’s second full length album A Good Enough Day kicked things up a notch. There were three singles and videos and huge radio play, followed by North American and European tours.
Fast forward to now, with more than a half-dozen albums under his belt, Juno nominations, songwriting awards and a faithful fan base, that early promise has more than been realized. His latest album (some say his most honest to date) is called Ghost Light. Oh yes, remember the family farm in Lakefield? Wood bought it.
Wood's eclectic playlist includes tracks by Clearance Clearwater Revival, Joel Plaskett, Hannah Georges, Patrick Watson, Cat Stevens and Neil Young.
