Mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy originally planned to be a music teacher until she discovered her own voice while studying at university. A few years later, she joined the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble and has never looked back.
McHardy says that mezzos get to do everything: Suzuki in Madame Butterfly, Carmen in Bizet’s opera, Sister Helen in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, baroque operas by Monteverdi and Handel, among others — and that’s just a quick glance at some of the roles she sings. Her concert repertoire ranges from Bach to Mahler to Honneger.
McHardy has sung at Glyndebourne in England, at the Palais Garnier in Paris and at the Chateau de Versailles. A consummate concert and recital artist, she sings throughout North America. McHardy currently lives in Toronto and regularly performs there at the Four Seasons Centre in leading roles.
McHardy is this week’s host of This Is My Music.
This Is My Music is heard Saturdays on Radio 2 at 10:00 am ET.
