Bob Becker is a master percussionist. His touch and musicality on the fiendishly-difficult xylophone brings admiration to the eyes of fellow players. While many think of percussion instruments as the big noisy things at the back of the orchestra, Becker has spent his life making beautiful and incredible music with those noisemakers. Cymbals, xylophones, marimbas and drums of all kinds sing like opera divas under his skilled hands.
Becker grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania playing in bands and orchestras. Graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Becker went on to the World Music program at Wesleyan University. It was there that he became intensely involved with the music cultures of North and South India, Africa and Indonesia. He has brought his talent to the stage, performing with a range of artists from Pablo Casals, to the Kirov Ballet, from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra to the Paul Winter Consort.
Yet Becker is perhaps best known as a founding member of the Toronto-based percussion group, Nexus and as an essential component of Steve Reich's music. He has held those two gigs for well over forty years and counting!
