In the role of Chorus Master at the Canadian Opera Company, Sandra Horst is in charge of some of the most famous music in all of opera. She knows exactly what's going on both on and off stage and Horst has even had the opportunity to conduct a performance.
Horst's love of music began in Osler, Saskatchewan where she learned piano. While at school in grade 5, the grade 7 choir recruited her to be their pianist. Since then, choirs have always been part of her life even as Horst went on to earn her degrees in piano and accompanying. She's also a vocal coach and has worked with opera companies in Boston, St. Louis and Edmonton. Horst served on the music staff at the Banff Centre and at the Juilliard Opera Centre in New York. She has also been a judge for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Currently, Horst is the Director of Musical Studies for the Opera Division at the University of Toronto, in addition to her role at the Canadian Opera Company.
On this edition of This Is My Music, Horst shares the music that inspires her and the stories behind her selections.
This Is My Music is heard Saturdays on Radio 2 at 10:00 am ET.
