Peter De Sotto is the unusual combination of a violin soloist and operatic tenor. Sometimes he even does both at the same time! De Sotto has also created a very successful vehicle in which to do that. He founded Quartetto Gelato in 1989 with his wife, oboist Cynthia Steljes at the invitation of a restaurant owner. Together they went on to phenomenal success, performing all over the world and making half a dozen well-received CDs. Then Steljes succumbed to cancer in 2006. De Sotto had made her a promise that Quartetto Gelato would live on after her death and he has kept his word, creating an all new line-up.
Growing up in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke, De Sotto learned violin under his father who was a professional player. Later, De Sotto trained under the great Canadian violinist, Steven Staryk. He spent 11 years in the violin section of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra before leaving to concentrate on performing with Quartetto Gelato.
On this edition of This Is My Music, De Sotto shares his favourite selections and the stories behind his choices.
This Is My Music is heard Saturdays on Radio 2 at 10:00 am.
