It was a moment that sent a wave of shock and sorrow around the world, and marked the end of one of music's most defining eras: on Dec. 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot on the steps of his residence in New York City. He was just 40 years old.
The following day, fans were in shock, and gathered in myriad locales to remember the music star and peace activist. "I just feel very sorry and very sad, and I loved John a lot," said a young woman standing outside his home.
